We’re having a Pajama Picnic! Are you ready for an adult take on your childhood favorite? Here are our rules to keeping it CPL-real and keeping your sanity.

Pajama Picnic with Hearth & Health with Magnolia

Keep it at Home

Staying home is the new going out. An indoor picnic is a fun way to surprise your guests. Not only can you change the climate with a click of a button, but you can also throw your picnic regardless of the time of day or season. No ants here!

Keep it Rustic

Farmhouse rustic is totally living its best life right now. And its bff gingham is right there with it. Gingham bikinis, gingham scarves, you name it and you can find it covered in checkered squares. And that we did! While strolling the aisles of our second home, also known as Target, we came across the Hearth & Hand with Magnolia line. Designed by Joanna Gaines, this handpicked line oozes rustic charm and brings a sophisticated twist to casual country décor. Our eyes caught a glimpse of this gorgeous gingham table runner with coordinating napkins and it was love at first sight. Throw in our CPL staple mason jars and some baby’s breath (and Rosemary!) and suddenly you are serving up a healthy dose of country chic on a dime.

Keep it Simple

Drop the apron and pick up the phone. Picnics are about enjoying friends, family, and the carefree. Order a couple of your favorite foods, for us pizza is a no brainer, wings and of course drinks. Our summer fave is Frozé. We empty a bottle of Rosé into ice trays the night before… Okay, disclaimer, maybe not the whole bottle, because we sneak a couple sips. But anyway, right before the party, we drop the cubes in the blender with some fresh tart berries and juicy watermelon. With one sip, we are instantly transported to one of those cool restaurants, where everybody where’s a top bun, the kale is organic, and there is one of those trendy pink neon signs blinking above our head. Okay back to reality. Drink? Check. Pizza? Check. Dessert? Remember the mantra… “keep it simple”. Desserts are a fun way to bring a burst of color to the table and if that color is pink, well all the better. We went with donuts decorated in fruity pebbles. It played on the childhood theme and was the perfect pairing with pizza. Best of all we did not have to make them!

Keep it easy with foods for your indoor picnic.

Why should the fun end?

Charcuterie board + Wine = the CPL version of hitting up the drive through after the club. We created an after party table with a gorgeous charcuterie board and assortment of wines. This allows guests to transition from the table to a more relaxed vibe and enjoy other entertainment including music and movies.

Chacuterie, chips and dip and wine make for a fun afterparty!

Keep it fun

The best picnics are in your pajamas. Nix the formal wear and settle into your coziest pjs, or sexiest, whatever you prefer. But, you must wear gloss. Why? Well, because you are a CPL lady. Also, because this whole party is so amazing, all your besties will be instagram-ing it! Hope you’ve enjoyed the photos from our Pajama Picnic with Hearth and Health with Magnolia line!

Take Back Mother’s Day, Queen!

Disclosure: *We’ve included direct links to some of the items we’re recommending. Some of the links are affiliate links which means, at no additional cost to you, we will be compensated if you click through and make a purchase. 🙂

Mother’s day is almost here. The one day a year, when you reign as queen and finally get the appreciation that you damn well deserve.  Yes, we see you my sister, and today we say no more treating everybody else, time for our three favorite words… “Treat Yo Self.”

Treat Yo Self.

So, drive away from the car pool line, hit the snooze button as many times as you like, and you know what, that presentation that is due Monday… yeah that’s still due. We can’t do anything about that. We are bold, but not that bold. We still like to keep a day job. #Save But, we will give you our best tips on how to take back Mother’s Day. Make sure to read all the way to the end for a free printable Mother’s Day Wishlist. Leave it in their lunchbox, on the passenger seat of Honey’s car or be bold and deliver face to face. 🙂

So a la Parks and Rec, “clothes treat yo self, massages treat yo self, mimosas treat yo self, and fine leather goods treat yo self,” because we are going to give you the Mother’s day wish list of all wish lists. And instead of treating yo self, we are going to teach your family how to finally treat you. PREACH!

First up… jewelry. Now listen, we are all about a macaroni necklace, but the last time we got off one of our extreme diets, we found ourselves cooking that necklace and adding butter. It was the only carb we had left in the house! So, to resolve that issue, if you have a full time job, please provide some jewelry that is not edible.  All jewelry is welcomed and costume jewelry is a fun and inexpensive way to keep your mom on trend and save some coins. Right now Baroque glam is having a moment…did you see the photos of our fave celebs at the Met? The theme this year was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”. Rihanna, SZA, Cardi B, Blake Lively to name a few, rocked the Baroque look!. It’s all about grandeur and a CPL favorite…crowns.  Pieces like these let you have fun with fashion and because they are costume, you will have no worries parting with these items next season. Check out Express and Bauble Bar for fun, ornate, costume jewelry.

Flowers, okay so nothing is more agitating than when Bae half tries and brings home the last set of wilted flowers in the grocery store. I mean yeah it’s the thought that counts, but so does planning. Take away the pressure and pick some lovely flowers from UrbanStems. Click on this link and you’ll get $15 off your order.  Literally, these flowers were designed by Vogue and take your breath away. I mean sometimes when they come to the office, we feel so fancy that we pretend we are Meryl Streep in the Devil Wears Prada for a good ten minutes. “That is all.” Side note, this is almost as fun as when we wear berets and pretend to be Beyoncé.

And, if you’re just not in to flowers, ask for this delicious sausage bouquet! We love nothing better than a few cuts of salami and cheese paired with our fave wine or champs.

Not Your Momma’s Manis

At CPL, we are all about relaxation meets glam, and what better way to do both than a mani. Yes, nothing makes you feel more like a lady, than having your nails and your hair done! So, skip the standard ballerina pink and opt for a pattern that is bright or unique. This is the day you gave birth to a human… celebrate! And not with that same safe color that you have been rocking since your wedding day. We’re loving bright yellow SNS Organic nails, chrome nails, designs and any other look that says “I take risks!”

Not your momma's nails, chrome, SNS organic, designs.

Spa Time

If you can’t go to the spa have your family bring the spa to you.  Check out this article on how they can turn your bathroom into your retreat. Trust me, this is the one CPL tip we try to use twice a week, and it strengthens are Chi! Not to mention we smell delicious when we hop out of this bath. This one is great because the kids and the hubby can get involved with the prep, (kids love to see the bath bomb hit the water), and you get to enjoy!

Spa Time at home with a bath bomb, wine and a good book

Mother’s Day Card

Finally, nothing is more precious than a card, and if it’s homemade well that just takes the cake… and the pie…and the ice cream sandwich. Gifts that make an impact come down to being thoughtful, not being rich. So, save the dough and get the kiddies and yourself on cam sending heartfelt wishes. Why the camera? Well who cannot shed a tear while they are looking into their loved one eyes. Also get with the times, if you can Facetime us at the grocery store to pick up Tostino’s pizza rolls and a 12-pack of beer, than you can send us a heartfelt message via video cam. We’re loving the Boomerang app. Have the fam download it for free and take a super fun, 6 second video. Let’s see how creative they can get.

Printable Mother’s Day Wishlist

Now that we’ve given you our tips on how to take back Mother’s Day, make sure to download our free printable Mother’s Day wishlist so you make sure to get what you really want this Mother’s Day 2018!

Road Tripping with Kids

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we… YES!!! Well, almost.

Road Tripping with Kids

Disclosure: *To make it easy for your road tripping with kids, we’ve included direct links to many of the items we used. Some of the links are affiliate links which means, at no additional cost to you, we will be compensated if you click through and make a purchase. 🙂

School will soon be out for summer, which not only means the end of your sanity but that road trip season is creeping around the corner. Now, before you grimace, reminiscing on the days your thighs were stuck to the sweltering leather of your dad’s sedan, while your little brother insanely punched you squawking, “punch buggy don’t punch back”, and your mom through heavily frosted lips hissed at you both “don’t make me come back there”…we promise you this vacay will be smooth sailing driving. So in true Chill.Pop.Live. style we are sharing our guide for adulting through family vacays with long commutes. Buckle up, this could get bumpy! Let’s start our Road Trip with Kids.

Before you begin planning the big trip, include all of your family members in the planning process. Why? Well because everyone will be in a good mood and more inclined to participate in all of the activities, if they feel like they helped plan it.  Assign ownership of specific tasks to each family member, so that all the pressure doesn’t fall on you to create everyone’s dream vacay. We recommend you plan your trip in these four simple areas:

  1. Location
  2. Lodging
  3. Food
  4. Activities

Have a total #girlboss moment and make everyone present their ideas for a location and vote on it together. Then assign a task area to each family member and ask them to present multiple options for a group vote as well. Encourage your family to get creative with their presentations. If they want to go snorkeling they can present their idea in a swimsuit. In to the Tour de France? Ride your bike into the kitchen. You get the point, making the sales pitches fun will help everyone get in the mood and also sharpen your kids presentation skills. Win! Win! Recently, our CPL co-founder Bonnie-Love was planning a trip for Spring Break with her husband and 2 daughters. They took a family vote and settled on Orlando, Florida.

CPL's Road Trip Packing ChecklistYes going on vacay is not only about bright turquoise waters, soft sand beaches and crisp white sheets, but it also involves the P word… PACKING! Alright, we know packing can be a little overwhelming, so it’s time to do it Chill.Pop.Live. style.  First you are an adult, so instead of throwing your sh*t haphazardly in a bag, make a checklist. Make your checklist specific and include the count of each item needed. Which reminds us, there is absolutely no need to pack everything you own for an “emergency”. In the event a true emergency does happen, you won’t be thinking “well this tenth pair of goggles really came into use”. However, we will give you a pass on that extra 3:1 ratio of underwear every woman always packs. Yeah you know what we’re talking about… you’re gone for two days but you insist on bringing a week’s worth of undies. This is some sort of inherited generational curse, and even we can’t break it. The fear of being without undies is too real!

Give your family their list and one week prior to the trip ask each family member to check another family member’s bag. Before we forget, total space saver were these vacuum bags we found on Amazon. Fold your clothes, put in bag and roll-up. That’s it! It squeezes all the air out which means you can get more in your suitcase!

Next, luggage has come a long way since we were growing up, so invest in a set that works for your life. Suitcases now come with everything including multiple compartments, phone chargers, and a super cool thing we like to call 360 degree wheels that move in any direction. We’re crushing on the Genius Pack luggage. It comes with multiple compartments which helps to keep us majorly organized. And if you’re super nerdy like us, you’ll totally be in to these packing cubes complete with laundry bag, shoe bag and toiletry bags. Also, in the event that you do forget something… breathe! You can always purchase it at your destination.

Now that you’re all packed, it’s time to drag your baggage into the trunk. Pause. *In our Erykah Badu voice* “Bag Lady you going to hurt your back, dragging all them bags like thaaa…” Okay back to the blog.

The Dreaded Car Ride

Umm, long car rides, before we begin let’s create a safe word, ours is “Pinneaples.” Just kidding, trust us family road trips are so much better now thanks to technology, so let go of your previous apprehensions.  Gone are the days of limited air conditioning, paper maps, narrow backseats, gigantic coolers, and sing alongs. Okay maybe sing alongs can stay, we really like those… especially Beyonce ones. Bring on your dual climate control, GPS, yeti cups/snacks, and iEntertainment (iBooks, iTunes, iPads, iWhatevers). Yes, we totally have family sing alongs and play car games, but for a fourteen-hour drive, we definitely are those parents who believe in Ipads. It also gives us something to threaten to take away when they get into a fight.

“Kids, no more car songs” just isn’t as exciting as “Kids, no more Descendants”.

Snack Time cards prevent begging on Road Trips!

Bonnie-Love made a cute clothes line for her road trip with some yarn she had laying around. She created hanging cards with different times. At each time, her daughters got a snack. Not sure if your kids are like hers, but they can eat her out of house and home. So, she made sure to load up on snacks at BJ’s Warehouse before the trip. Stocking up on food for the trip, is a great way to save money and The idea behind the time cards is to eliminate the constant begging. Now, the kids know exactly when to ask for food. Genius! Do yourself a favor and get a car seat cooler/organizer to ride in between your kids. With cupholders, built-in tray table and compartments to store toys and gadgets, this will become one of your fave travel buddies!

Golden Rule of Road Tripping with Kids: Stock Up on Food

Are we there yet?

Yes we finally are, now that you are finally there take a moment to soak it in. You are creating memories that will last a lifetime and there is no place you would rather be in this moment than present with the people who love you the most.  Watching your children’s eyes light up as they experience a new environment for the first time is priceless. You’ve survived road tripping with kids! Share this with all your mom friends that are taking family road trips soon. 🙂

A Besties’ Guide to Throwing a Brunch

A Step by Step Guide to Throwing a Brunch: A 25th Birthday Party

“Hey Shawdy, it’s your birthday and we going party like it’s your birthday! And you know we gonna have a brunch, ’cause it’s your birthday!”

Disclosure: * Some of the links in this post are affiliate links which means, at no additional cost to you, we will be compensated if you click through and make a purchase. 🙂

Do you have a birthday coming up? Feeling overwhelmed and getting the birthday blues? Or maybe you’re planning a party for your bestie. With so many options and decisions, it’s easy to get bogged down in the details and quickly turn a happy day into a stressful one. Well no worries, CPL to the rescue.  When our CPL Bestie Zari was approaching the big 25, she asked could we help. She wanted an event that was pretty, but above all fun. We put on our thinking berets… Why berets? Well they are having a major fashion moment. And after giving our best Beyoncé in the mirror for five moments, we designed a super cool brunch. With this step by step guide to throwing a brunch, you will be brunching with your besties in no time.

The Menu

brunch appetizers

Don’t overthink it! Your menu should be delicious, but also simple. At CPL, we like to assign levels of difficulties to our food categories. All starter dishes should be easy, but colorful. Fruits and veggies are totally the way to go! For brunch, one of the easiest items to make is avocado toast. Smash avocados with a squeeze of lime, slather on toast and sprinkle on some salt, pepper and red chili flakes. Want to kick it up a notch, drizzle some balsamic glaze, and add chunks of goat cheese. Feeling a little naughty? Place a poached egg on top. Partner this up with a grapefruit salad and your brunch is off to a great start. Worried about your main dishes? Calm down and pop a bottle, because we have you covered.

These dishes do require cooking; however, they use many of the same ingredients and don’t have too many steps.

Less ingredients = Less food prep. Less food prep = More champagne.

brunch food

The idea is for you to spend your day having fun with your besties, not slaving away in the kitchen. Our recommendation Besties, make french toast. You can use your traditional recipe, but make sure you add in a teaspoon of orange zest and a tablespoon of honey. It will give your dish an added layer of flavor and sophistication. Now a true brunch should have multiple options, so switch your traditional quiche for a crustless version in ramekins or as we call it delicious egg soufflé. Switch up your recipe a bit and experiment with a smoky cheese like Gruyere. Give your home fries a kick with our Garlic Aioli sauce. For our meat eaters, grill some bacon and sausage on the side.

Cocktails & Cake

Confetti Cake and Triple Citrus Mimosas

And cocktails, why champagne of course. Try this super cool Triple Citrus Mimosa from The Pretty Dish. Desert? Well it’s a b-day party so Cake, Cake, Cake! This cute little confetti cake fit in perfectly with our theme. The gold candles gave it a splash of sexy.

The Set Up

Guide to throwing a brunch tablescape

The key to making your brunch look great is an amazing table-scape.  Pick a theme and make that sh*t bananas. We love the whole pineapple and palms movement that is shaking up Pinterest. Add in some pink and rose gold and we are definitely having a CPL moment. We created custom menus that the birthday girl really appreciated.  The super cute green dishes we got from Joanna Gaines collection at target. The pink cloth napkins were a steal at Amazon. If you haven’t picked up yet, we love us a nice cloth napkin. Gives the table a touch of sophistication and are washable so use them as many times as you want. The buffet serving tiers, vases, and glasses are from our go to… Crate and a Barrel.  Fruit and flowers are always a great way to bring some color to a table. Do you remember CPL co-founder Pam’s fruit table runner from her wedding? Everyone was talking about it! Last tip: Low on a flower budget, place single buds in a slender vase.

The Final Step

Have fun! It’s your birthday and we going to party like it’s a CPL day! Take lots of pics and make sure to tag us #chillpoplive

Double Dating Ideas for Busy Couples

Hey CPL ladies! Today we are talking about a different kind of bestie… “Double Besties.” We understand, and know adulting is super hard. Between the endless feedings, Netflix marathons, and “what if” arguments… Please see below for reference:

Wifey: What if I die, would you marry someone else?

Bae: Of course… but not for a very long time.

Wifey: Oh, so you are already planning to cheat on me.

Bae: Well it’s until death do us part and you are dead.

Wifey: And you are a monster!!!!!!!!

End scene.

Easy and fun couples date night ideas

It can feel like you and Bae are on a desert island, while everyone else is living their “best life” on Instagram.  And although the location of an exotic island may seem appealing… it would be more glamorous, if there weren’t bills, fighting children, and an abundance of strep throat and pink eye. Until that magical day when you spot them across the playground, that cool couple with kids about your age. They are arguing just as loudly as you and Bae, while bandaging scraped knees, fighting off exhaustion, and discreetly sipping spiked coffee from a Seven Eleven Big Gulp cup. This must be a mirage. They seem real, and caring, and most importantly fun. Let’s go over and meet them. And as you proudly strut up to them, couple’s mating season begins. You officially have someone to vent to when you are stuck baking brownies for the bake sale.

Here are CPL’s tips for couples double dating

  1. Stay in – Whip up an exciting dinner at home and go for exotic fare. Let’s face it, all week long, you have been stuffing your dainty face with goldfish, organic chicken nuggets, and the scrapings of your kids leftover plates. Tuck the kiddies in and treat yourself and your friends to something they could only imagine eating at a cool food truck. Our favorite go to is the super easy Bulgogi recipe from the Godmother of Entertaining Martha Stewart. This takes only a half hour to make and we double the sauce to flavor precooked meatballs. Defrost some steamed dumplings and you have a pretty impressive meal. Keep lettuce wraps on hand for those with diet restrictions. And of course we Crate and Barreled up our presentation.
  2. Make it a family thing – The best part about hanging out with a couple with kids is you no longer need a babysitter to have fun. So head to someplace both the kids and adults can enjoy… our recommendation camping! Sit underneath the stars all while bonding, toasting s’mores, and telling each other scary stories. Bring along canoes and have a family race or get lazy and drift along the river in a tube on a slow Sunday morning.
  3. Paint and Sip – Grab some canvases and head outside. Let nature work its inspiration, while the kids have a blast and you sip cocktails and draw a la Bob Ross. This is a great way for both families to break from electronic entertainment and stay present in the moment.
  4. Use Groupon! This site has hundreds of activities dedicated to couples, families, friends and singles. Learn or try something you always wanted to all with your new besties beside you.\
  5. Enjoy having friends! Make sure to cherish your new friendships and take the time to help them grow. One of the best feelings in the world is having someone you can relate to, so remember that. You will transition from “what if” arguments to actual confirmation of your deepest thoughts:

Wifey: I know it’s crazy.

Wifey 2: Like he can throw a sac of beans into a cornhole this small.

Wifey: But can’t pee inside of a wide toilet.

And that my friend is priceless!

Comment below and let us know about your favorite double dating ideas!

Quick & Easy Dragon Loves Taco Party

A Quick & Easy Dragon Loves Taco Party

Disclosure: *To make it easy for your last minute party, we’ve included direct links to many of the items we used. Some of the links are affiliate links which means, at no additional cost to you, we will be compensated if you click through and make a purchase. 🙂

We have all been there. Yes you know what we are talking about… it’s your kid’s bday and you have no idea what you are going to do. Between conference calls, checking homework, and babysitting your husband, you completely lost track of time and money and the day is quickly approaching. Our CPL bestie Karleeta reached out to us with the same problem. Check out our tips for throwing together a birthday party that is super quick and works with any budget.

At CPL, we are no stranger to throwing together quick shindigs. And let’s be honest, with everything you have going on, you probably don’t have the time to plan out party details months in advance. Heck, you probably can’t remember the last time you went to the bathroom without someone knocking on the door. However, fear not besties, the key to quickly pulling off a party is creating a schedule.  By staying organized, we put together this party in two weeks.  Here is your schedule countdown.

Set a Budget

The first thing to get this train moving is checking your wallet. Set your budget asap and stick to it. Remember focus on spending creativity and not always money. Check in with your family and besties to see if they would be willing to donate their services in lieu of a gift. This is also a great way to incorporate other children in your family. With simple instructions, Titan’s younger family members created personalized party favors as their gift to him. The kids found the crafts creative and fun, and most of the items they already had around the house including paper towel rolls, glue, construction paper, etc. Need a clown? Your bestie who is always goofing around has just been nominated.  She can consider this payback for that time you were nursing and you went to her birthday party at the club. There is a ton of ways to get creative to bring your vision to life.

Pick a Theme

When picking a theme make sure it is unique to your child.  You may think because you are on a quick timeline that this party can’t be detailed and personal, but it totally can.  The key is picking something that is totally special to your child and making it your own. Is your kid obsessed with wildlife? Throw him/her a safari in the backyard complete with stuffed animals. How about unicorns? Throw your kid a rainbow colored party with sparkles. For Karleeta’s son Titan’s 2nd birthday party we went super creative with a Dragons Love Tacos theme. It was priceless to see his reaction at his favorite book coming to life. It’s also cool to add an element of surprise to your theme.  Titan’s birthday is in March one the coldest months of the year, so we made sure to bring some sunshine and give his party a “day in the park” vibe.

Shopping Time!*

I have one word Amazon, Amazon, Amazon! Whether you are low on time, or not, you can all have all your purchases sent via Amazon Prime in a couple days or less. Also, the competitive pricing is amazing and will help you shop for bargains. We scoured Amazon looking for the coolest party materials and purchased these fun food baskets, bright balloons, awesome dragons, nice party banner, adorable crazy straws, colorful polka dots plates, and the cutest item of all… miniature wooden park benches. Easy to assemble, these benches gave the whole party an outdoor look. Party favors were easy. We laid off the sugar, our CPL babies are sweet enough, and purchased Crayola 4-pack crayons from you guessed it… Amazon. We packaged these with coloring books that we printed out. The best part? We picked out all these items the week of the party and got them the next day!

Dragon Loves Taco Decor

Repurpose Party Goods

True to budget, we also looked at items that we had in our house that we could repurpose. These green Ikea Hampen rugs are a CPL favorite and we love to use them at parties to bring in that grassy knoll feel. You might recall them from our affordable little girls’ tea party. For parties with a festive feel, we love to use our Crate and Barrel galvanized servingware. Oh, and these chalkboards that of course we got at Amazon for CPL co-founder Pam’s ultra-chic wedding on a budget.

On the Menu

Oh, and food we almost forgot! One of the best things about the Dragons Love Tacos theme is the food was already picked out. To amp the tacos theme we threw an element of surprise, you know that thing we mentioned earlier, and did a kid’s take on Mexican street food. Creating this culinary feast was quick and definitely fun! When creating multiple items for a party, we like to mix super easy items that don’t require cooking with simple prep food items. Instead of grilled Mexican street corn, which we absolutely love but not so much for a kids’ party, we opted for popcorn served in paper cones.  We swapped empanadas for Smucker’s Uncrustables, and we did three flavors of tacos and nachos.  Look out for the recipe in our future posts. And of course, we had to look out for the adults without a little party in a cup. The frozen cucumber and strawberry margaritas were to die for.
